Amazing Monuments Surprisingly Close
It's not just the center of Indianapolis - it's also our soul. The Soldiers and Sailors Monument was the first in the nation dedicated to the common soldier. Along with Indiana's Civil War veterans, the monument commemorates the valor of all Indiana military men and women in the wars that proceeded World War I.
It was dedicated in 1902 as President Woodrow Wilson joined a crowd of thousands on Monument Circle. The cheers still echo today as you see Lady Victory, raising the flag, facing south, welcoming her troops home. At her feet is a former slave holding up a broken chain. High above flies the angel of peace, holding a victory wreath and an olive branch.
This civic masterpiece and scores of others are just steps away from the Sheraton Hotel City Centre Indianapolis. Explore them all.

Indianapolis Raceway Park offers drag racing and NASCAR Busch Craftsman Truck Series events. Monument Circle is home to the 284-foot Soldiers and Sailors Monument.
Dedicated in 1902, and made of Indiana limestone, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument pays tribute to the Indiana servicemen who served in the Civil War and the Spanish-American War.
