In little over quarter of a century the Long Island wine industry has grown from a single vineyard to over 3,000 acres of vines and over thirty wineries. It's one of the country's most exciting wine producing regions, with its blends earning high praise, top awards, and coveted spots on wine lists coast to coast.

The majority of the wineries and vineyards are located in Suffolk County, on its East End, on the North and South Forks where Long Island's maritime climate, geography and soil characteristics provide ideal conditions.

Claim to Fame: In 1972, Holtsville became famous (or maybe infamous) to millions in the Northeast when an Internal Revenue Service center for processing federal income tax forms was opened on a 67-acre site on Waverly Avenue.

Historians say that the first maps showing homes in Holtsville - known as Waverly in the early years are dated 1838 to 1844. Holtsville was named after Joseph Holt a postmaster general.

The history of what is now the LIRR began on April 25, 1832 when the Brooklyn and Jamaica RR Company was incorporated and started building its ten-mile long route from the East River in Brooklyn along Atlantic Ave. to Jamaica. Two years later, on April 24, 1834 the Long Island Rail Road Company was formed.
